While the back of the David Ly’s book Not All Dragons tells you that Rhys wakes up on the shores of Lanilia “with mysterious wounds on his back and no memory of his life before,” you only have to read the prologue to understand that whatever happened: that mystery is of Rhys’ making. Rhys chose to erase his memories. And if you are me, you don’t know why Rhys decided that until you read the rest of the story.

The prologue was amazing, capturing my attention immediately, while also allowing me to experience Rhys’ terror as his memories disappears. You can’t help but wonder as Rhys’ memories slip away, if he regrets his choice. It was a powerful beginning.

Almost immediately, Rhys meets Delia, a mermaid who is intrigued by this man whose scent is unfamiliar and who is unable to answer any questions about himself. The pair begin a journey to discover who Rhys is and “who he might become as they hunt for the truth beneath story and prophecy.”

I don’t want to inadvertently create any spoilers but the species in these books are unlike anything I have read before. Ly does a great job in describing his creatures as well as the world they live in. I found the book was a bit draggy in the middle, but the ending was interesting and answers were discovered.
